D’LAB 2017 & Artists

D’LAB  2017

Dhaka Live Art Biennale

Biennale Timeline:  1-3 February, 2017

Back ART Foundation  initiated and organized a performance based International Live Art exhibition – ‘Dhaka Live Art Biennale’ for the first time in Bangladesh. In this event Back ART had invited national and International practicing performance artists. This edition the theme of this Biennale was cast around the concept of “How The Body Traces Language and Culture: Profiles of Performativity”.  33 artists from about 13 countries participated in this biennale. This first Live Art Biennale in Bangladesh was a big step for the Bangladeshi Contemporary Art Movement towards a future where art would be in proximity with the people as well as the global trends.

Performance as an art form is only about 30 years old in the art movement of Bangladesh. In the period of 1980’s performance art has been introduced as a medium of ART to the Bangladeshi art audience impacting the very relationship between artist and audience. Over the last five years it has become very popular as a dialogic medium in Bangladesh. Many events and workshops of performance art have been organized in recent years which allowed artists to present themselves through a framework taking the idea of the body and its place in the world in myriad situations. Since each performer use the body and its surroundings as living art materials, the communicative element is always reemphasized, making performance art one of the most popular form of practice.

About Back ART Foundation

Back Art is a group of young and promising visual artist in Dhaka, Bangladesh. It is working on interdisciplinary and contemporary art languages focused on Bangladesh. Back ART primarily look forward to pushing young practitioners to the New ART movement and continues to promote new languages in the context of national and international art scene. Back ART was founded in 2013 as a conduit for contrarian art projects with an ambition for establishing more nonconventional institutions, artists groups given to divergent trends. Back ART’s long-standing philosophy embodies an in-depth, long-term commitment to individual artist, and supporting an artist’s vision and his/her practice over time. Back Art believes in the transformative power of art. Back ART has already organized more than eight national and international art projects successfully in the last three years.

Impact on Bangladeshi Community

Most people today are inspired by the multi-cultural exposure and are motivated by what can be termed the artists’ ability to push the boundaries. So, Back ART focuses on cultural aspects, environment, community, mythology, native language, ritual activities etc. in their projects to ensure a contextual growth of languages that are new and emerging. Through this International performance event we would like to establish and represent the importance of our language and culture to the advantage of various forms of Performance Art. Though the term ‘Performance Art’ is a modern category there are examples through which one can prove that its very essence can be found in our cultural past as well as present. Tradition and rituals rural origin may provide a basis — activities such as palagaan, jatrapala, puthi path, sonkranti, local ritual dances, etc, may be taken as our point of entry into that wealth of heritage.

Back ART believes that this Live Art Biennale will be a platform for all Live Art mediums where every country might join with all types if living Art and it will be a massive event in future for performance art, voice art, theatre etc. So, in the long run this Live Art Biennale must create a common space for multi-national Live Artists where Bangladesh will be the ambassador of Live Art.

So the mission is, Back ART as an art collaborator representing the community of Bangladeshi artists would like to organize this Dhaka Live Art Biennale in every 2 years to expose our own culture and its recent extended form in the shapes of live art to the world.
